As the calendar turns to a new year, I’m taking a moment to reflect on 2024—a year that challenged, inspired, and taught me invaluable lessons. Here’s what I’ve learned, drawn from the highs and lows of my professional and personal experiences.

1. Diversity in Genomics: A Call for Equity

One of the most profound lessons of 2024 was how crucial diversity is in genomic research. Reading through the insights from studies on misclassified genetic variants in non-European populations highlighted a glaring truth: for too long, we’ve centred research around limited reference datasets. The result? Misdiagnoses and a failure to serve marginalised communities.

Yet, there’s hope. As datasets diversify, the opportunity to reanalyse genetic data offers life-changing potential for these underrepresented populations. For me, this reaffirmed the importance of championing inclusive science and making the benefits of genomic research accessible to all—especially those who’ve historically been left behind.

2. Embracing Discomfort as Growth

Growth doesn’t come from staying in our comfort zones. It emerges in those moments of awkwardness, failure, and uncertainty. Whether it was managing difficult conversations in academia or navigating moments of doubt in my career, I’ve learned that discomfort is the price of growth. It’s not easy, but it’s essential.

This year, I also rediscovered the value of slowing down. Adopting a “slow productivity” mindset taught me that it’s not about how much I work but how intentional and effective I am (See Cal Newport’s book on it). Small, consistent actions lead to long-term transformation.

3. Passion and Perseverance in Science

2024 reaffirmed why I became a scientist in the first place. Despite the challenges—frustrations with institutions, teaching struggles, and the constant balancing act of research and responsibilities—science remains my compass.

The love of discovery, the joy of sharing new knowledge, and the privilege of working with brilliant colleagues worldwide have been my anchors. I’ve embraced the mindset that failure isn’t the enemy—it’s a stepping stone to deeper insights.

As I reflect on my role in the Peruvian Genome Project, I feel a profound sense of purpose. We’re not just collecting DNA; we’re empowering communities and humanising the field of genomics. This project has deepened my commitment to making advanced technologies accessible to those who often go unheard. Not least I should add the joy of working with Heinner Guio, Julio A. Poterico and Segun Fatumo on this amazing adventure.

4. The Power of Self-Reflection

Throughout the year, I leaned on self-reflection to stay grounded. A simple nightly inventory—asking questions like, Was I kind today? Was I thinking of others? What could I have done better?—helped me recalibrate and focus on what truly matters.

This habit reminded me of the importance of humility and honesty with oneself. It’s not about perfection but about progress.

5. Building My Own Narrative

In a hyperconnected world, personal branding has taken on new meaning. This year, I realised the importance of controlling my narrative—not just for career growth but for ensuring my values and vision remain at the forefront.

From leveraging social media to expanding my influence, I learned to be intentional about how I present myself to the world. My story isn’t just about accomplishments; it’s about the struggles, lessons, and impact I aim to create.

6. Prioritising Energy and Focus

If 2024 taught me anything, it’s that distractions are the silent killers of ambition. Whether it’s wasted time on unproductive tasks or getting caught up in external pressures, I’ve learned that my energy is my most valuable resource.

I’ve become more disciplined in saying “no” to commitments that don’t align with my goals and “yes” to opportunities that drive meaningful impact. This has allowed me to focus on what truly matters—whether it’s my research, teaching, or personal growth.

7. Science as a Noble Pursuit

Despite the challenges, I feel privileged to be a scientist. Science, to me, is the modern-day equivalent of exploration—charting the unknown and bringing back discoveries that can transform lives. This year reinforced my belief that being a scientist is not just a career; it’s a calling.

As I look to the future, I’m reminded of a simple truth: the journey is long, and the work is never done. But every step forward—no matter how small—is a step worth taking.

Closing Thoughts

2024 was a year of lessons, both bitter and sweet. It reminded me to embrace discomfort, prioritise what matters, and stay grounded in my purpose. As I step into 2025, I do so with a renewed sense of focus and gratitude.

Here’s to the journey ahead—may it be filled with learning, growth, and impact.
